I hope that in my lifetime I will do enough good to make up for my sins.

What if I do my absolute best and still come up short?

It is true that forgiveness is earned, and it is not free.
But the good news is that it has already been earned for us and is now offered to us for free.
You cannot do it on your own.
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”
John 15:4

Connection restored

Consider a fruit tree like the one described above. If you break a branch off, it's no longer connected to its source of life. So, how can it produce fruit?
You are like that branch.
Your sin disconnects you from God, your source.
And that's where Jesus comes in, healing that connection.
As the image of God, Jesus Christ came as a man, lived a righteous life, then died to pay the penalty for our unrighteousness.

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.
Romans 10:9-11

Your debt is paid

We will never be good enough on our own. But our merciful God sent his son, Jesus, to earn forgiveness for us. It is by Jesus' life, death, and resurrection that we can be saved.

We can be reconnected with the source of all righteousness by accepting Jesus as our Lord.
